Bathroom fans

A bathroom fan is an essential feature of every bathroom or room with a toilet. It helps effectively combat moisture, minimizes the risk of mold formation and the spread of unwanted microorganisms, protects bathroom fixtures from damage, and also reduces the risk of injury. Slipping on a wet floor is unpleasant for any age group. Choose carefully.

Types of bathroom fans

1. Radial – typically used for larger, commercial spaces (air is transported by turbines from multiple rooms at once)

2. Axial – the most commonly used type in households

3. Duct – connected to the ventilation system of apartment buildings

TIP: In apartment buildings, find out what type of ventilation system is used. With central extraction, it is difficult to regulate both performance and noise levels.

What to consider when choosing a bathroom fan

1. Room size. Generally, the larger your bathroom, the higher the air flow rate you will need from the fan. The calculation is simple—multiply the bathroom volume by a factor of 7. The layout, fixtures, and fan placement also play a role.

2. Fan performance. There is an easy way to calculate the required fan power. Multiply the room volume by the air change factor (a bathroom requires at least 5).

3. Noise level. The optimal noise level is 30 dB, ensuring the fan won’t disturb you even during a relaxing bath. However, a common value is around 40 dB. We also recommend a quieter fan for the toilet, as you certainly don’t want to wake anyone at night—either in your apartment or your neighbors’.

Note – the noise level is also affected by the type of wall where the fan is installed (brick dampens sound, while wood and concrete amplify it). We therefore recommend installing it in a false wall or a plasterboard ceiling.

4. Installation location. There are ceiling-mounted and wall-mounted bathroom fans. The ceiling option does not disrupt the bathroom’s appearance and offers higher efficiency, but requires a longer ventilation duct. A wall-mounted fan only needs a short duct.

5. Odor elimination. This is especially important if you are choosing a fan for a toilet or a bathroom with a toilet. In this case, focus on bathroom fans with a backdraft damper, which prevents odors from returning to the room.

6. Installation diameter is particularly relevant for axial fans, which are available in 100 mm, 120 mm, and 150 mm versions. Measure carefully.

Ensure comfort

An equally important topic when it comes to bathroom fans is how they are controlled. The classic option is a wall switch, which you turn on and off as needed. A more convenient solution is a bathroom fan with a run-on timer, which switches off automatically after a set time. An interesting option is a bathroom fan with a humidistat, which activates automatically when the room’s humidity exceeds a certain level. In some cases, a fan with a motion sensor can also be useful.
