Types of shelves

Every well-equipped bathroom needs several shelves—even small bathrooms. In compact spaces, shelves often replace bathroom cabinets, as there’s often not enough room for them.

- Shower shelves. These can be corner shelves or classic straight shelves. Corner shelves may come as baskets with a wire base or trays with a fully covered bottom. Double corner shelves are also available, giving you twice the storage space. It’s up to you to decide what best suits your shower.

- Open bathroom shelves. Ideal for placing near a mirror. Everything stored on them is clearly visible and easily accessible.

- Deep bathroom shelves. These are enclosed on the sides, so items stored on them are less likely to fall off.

- Wall niches. An integrated storage solution for showers, suitable for solid walls as well as plasterboard constructions. Installing a wall niche is more demanding, but the result always looks great. Niches are available in many sizes and typically include water-damage protection.

Material

What distinguishes bathroom shelves from shelves used in other rooms is their high resistance to moisture. Among popular materials, we recommend:

- Glass, chosen for its stylish design and the sense of lightness it brings to the bathroom. Glass shelves usually feature a metal edge or mounting elements. Manufacturers use different types of glass—do you prefer frosted, clear, or matte glass?

- Plexiglass, also known as PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate). While it can theoretically be broken (as often seen at ice hockey games), it’s much harder to break than standard glass.

- Plastic, such as ABS or TPU. Plastic bathroom shelves are typically more affordable.

- Chrome, which is corrosion-resistant and an uncrowned king among bathroom materials. Bathroom taps and many accessories are usually made of chrome—making it a natural choice for shelves as well.

- Other types of metal. Common options include brushed bronze, aluminium, or steel. The advantages of metal are clear—it’s sturdy and precise. Different metals come in different colours, so the choice depends entirely on your taste.

- Bamboo, a trend of recent years. It’s resistant to damage, doesn’t absorb water, and retains its colour over time. It’s valued for its natural look and is suitable for allergy sufferers, as it doesn’t attract bacteria or mould.

Size

Of course, the most important thing is that the shelf fits its intended space. This is usually not an issue for shelves placed in the bathroom area, but for shelves inside a shower enclosure, careful measuring is essential. It’s great to have plenty of room for your essentials, but remember that larger bathroom shelves are harder to keep clean—and they don’t look great if they’re only one-third full.
