The company BRITA began its successful journey in the 1960s, when Heinz Hankammer founded the company, naming it after his daughter – Brita.
The initial goal was to find a way to optimize water from the standard tap, especially for use in car batteries. He succeeded. However, his vision extended further, and in 1970 he launched the first household water filter jug, which he also patented. What started in a private garden eventually developed over the following decades into an internationally recognized company.
The first products were quite different from today’s models. The focus was on simple manufacturing and high functionality. Initially, they were essentially funnels in bright orange (reflecting the style of the 1970s). However, the technology itself was revolutionary. The combination of ion-exchange resin and activated carbon significantly reduced limescale and removed substances that negatively affected water taste and smell, resulting in softer, more pleasant water.
Success quickly followed, particularly when Heinz Hankammer demonstrated the difference between regular and filtered water using tea. Tea made with regular water left unattractive marks on cups. Tea made with filtered water was clear, highlighting subtle flavors and aromas. This simple method proved that water quality is crucial for preparing food and beverages.
Heinz Hankammer continued to innovate, expanding and improving the product range. In 1979, filter cartridges were added to the portfolio. In 1992, a recycling facility for used filter cartridges was established in Taunusstein, Germany. By giving new life to “old” cartridges, BRITA minimizes its ecological impact.
In 1980, production of professional filtration devices began, appealing to baristas and restaurants. Filtered water not only tastes great but also protects expensive equipment. Storage of filtration materials is also convenient.
Since 1999, the CEO of the BRITA group has been the founder’s son, Markus Hankammer. Today, the company operates in 28 national and international subsidiaries and offices across 66 countries. Main production facilities are located in Germany, the UK, Italy, and China. On the SANITINO website, you can currently find various water filter jugs and filter cartridges. The range also includes filtered water reservoirs.
BRITA filter jugs impress not only with performance but also with design. They are intended not just for filtration but to visually enhance the home environment. Clear, simple, yet strikingly original shapes have not gone unnoticed. The Navelia filter jug won the Japanese Good Design Award in 2008 and the Red Dot Award in 2009.
