Are you choosing a toilet for your bathroom or a separate WC? You can choose from several types. Close-coupled toilets are still the most popular option. Their main feature is that they consist of a floor-standing toilet bowl with a cistern. Another option is toilet pans where the cistern is not included; it is usually mounted higher on the wall behind the toilet.

Toilet pans are further divided into two types—floor-standing or wall-hung toilets, which have become very popular in recent years.

Close-coupled toilets are easy to install and include a cistern

Close-coupled toilets are an ideal solution where the bathroom is already finished. If you choose a close-coupled toilet as a set, it also represents an economical solution for equipping your toilet, as it already includes a built-in cistern with a flush button—so you don’t need anything else. Installation is very simple and requires no construction work in the wall. The only things to consider are the waste outlet direction and the water inlet. Wall-hung toilets are modern and elegant

Wall-hung toilets are an elegant solution for most modern interiors. In addition to their clean appearance, they also offer a practical solution for both taller and shorter users. Wall-hung toilets can be installed at virtually any height to suit your needs. For proper functionality, a wall-hung toilet requires a concealed cistern / installation frame and a flush plate, which must be compatible with the selected frame. The installation frame needs to be built into the wall during the rough construction stage.

Toilet size: both length and height matter

Once you know which type suits you best, continue choosing according to the toilet size. Selecting a suitable toilet for a small room can be challenging. Look for models with a length of up to 50 cm so you can close the door comfortably. If you have a larger space, you can opt for a bigger toilet that offers greater comfort.

Not only the length is important, but also the height. With wall-hung toilets this is not an issue, as they can be installed at any height. With close-coupled toilets or floor-standing pans, check the toilet height in the manufacturer’s specifications. The standard height is 40 cm. Families with children may prefer a lower toilet, such as 35 cm, while taller users or elderly people may find a bowl height of up to 45 cm more comfortable, making it easier to stand up.

Flushing: the right technology saves water and reduces maintenance

Another key criterion is flushing. First and foremost, consider water consumption. Modern toilets are generally much more efficient than models sold several decades ago. If you want to control water usage effectively, choose a model with dual-flush technology. The small flush usually releases 3 to 4 litres, while the full flush can use up to 8 litres.

Flushing is also related to the flush technology, i.e. how water flows into the toilet bowl. A major trend in recent years is rimless flushing (also referred to as rimless toilets), which is hygienic, easy to maintain, and does not consume as much water.

Ceramic is the dominant material

When it comes to materials, ceramic is dominant in the toilet category. It is elegant, affordable, and available in many shapes and colours.
